Chubby Checker, the Fat Boys and Will Smith: That's my XM

I hate to keep harping on this, but the selection on XM’s channel 21 is just utterly jaw-dropping. Sure, they’re still playing all the great music from Pink, Boys Like Girls and DJ Okayshun featuring Lil’ Stinkbug with T-Pum’kin and Mo’ Snapple (OK, I made up that last collection of names, but wouldn’t they all be good hip-hop names). But they are sneaking in some wild selections. Peep the list below, and bear in mind, I’m not making this up.

  • “The Twist” by Chubby Checker with the Fat Boys. Yes, novelty rap at its finest. I remember my dad telling me that when he first heard “The Twist” in 1960, all he could think was, “This song is catchy, but it REALLY needs three fat guys making drum noises in the background.” He was a visionary.
  • “Buffalo Stance” by Neenah Cherry. Twice in the last week. Seriously, someone at XM has a problem related to either this song or Ms. Cherry.
  • “Round and Round” by Tevin Campbell. I mean, was this song even that popular when it was popular? By the way, looking up Tevin Campbell on Wikipedia led me to this nugget, “In 1999, Campbell was arrested after soliciting oral sex from an undercover police officer posing as a male prostitute during a sting operation in Van Nuys, California. According to police reports, marijuana residue was also found in Campbell’s car during the arrest.” That’s just solid.  Based on that history, the Cincinnati Bengals made him the #1 pick in the 2000 draft.
  • “Wild Wild West” by Will Smith featuring Dru Hill and Kool Moe Dee. Really? Really? How does this qualify as an “old school” song? Or even one worth remembering?  Of all of the Fresh Prince’s works, this is the one that’s aging less well (and that’s like saying that Ashley is the Olson twin who is less thin).
