By the numbers: four years on the job

Last week, I blogged about hitting the four-year mark at my current gig. I got some good feedback about it, but I think the best part was when I ran the numbers to see exactly what I’ve created. That’s a long time to be in roughly the same role, albeit with added responsibilities here and there. So, here’s what I found. How I (or any of us) don’t have carpal tunnel, I have no clue.

  • Total number of work-related emails sent: 22,656. At the end of every year, I end up deleting emails I send to the wife, my buddies and other such stuff. But I keep everything sent to work contacts, as well as any important message to me. I wish Google Desktop would give me the average length of my responses so we could break it down to actual keystrokes. Then again, no I don’t.
  • Total size of saved email files: 4.217 GB. Is that a lot? Seriously, my IT guy looked at me askew when he saw the size of those files, but it’s an archive. And it’s not like we’re running out of network space.
  • Number of emails that reference the word “fustercluck,” my favorite term for things that go awry: 107.
  • Number of emails that use the phrase, “Let me know if you have any additional questions,” which is my go-to term for “I’ve given you what I can, but seriously, knock it off”: 153
  • Number of emails that use the phrase, “Let me know if this works,” which is my go-to term for “I have no idea what you want, but here’s something”: 203.
  • Number of emails that use the phrase, “What the hell?” which is my go-to term for “What the hell?”: 65.
  • Number of emails that reference “press release,” “media plan” and “article pitch”:942, 113 and 576. Not surprising for a PR guy.
  • Number of Word documents created: 1097. Not an email thing, but a scan of what I’ve wrought was pretty jarring.
  • Number of PowerPoint presentations created: 1344. Pretty surprising that this has overtaken Word docs, but since I spend more and more time dealing with analysts, creating presentations gets to be a bigger thing.

That’s about all I can think to search on. Many thanks to Google Desktop for searching those thousands of emails for me. And thanks to the hundreds of people I’ve emailed over the years. It’s been a pleasure. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

How many emails (sent or received) that reference the Tarheels, the Wolfpack or the inner-office fued between the two?
How about the number of emails with a You Tube link showing a clip from Family Guy or The Office? But I’m not calling you out!
