Great new bar game: Change that (closing credits) tune

Last week, I stumbled across this link for Vader Sessions. Some evil genius out there changed Darth Vader’s lines from Star Wars episode IV to other lines that James Earl Jones spoke in other movies. Just watched it for the seventh time. Still laughed out loud throughout.

My favorite part: turning the interrogation of Princess Leia into a funkified, let’s-get-it-on scene. OK, so it’s technically incestuous because Vader was Leia’s father. But, still, it’s funny. Brilliant, I say. Brilliant! Well worth 10 minutes of your time.

The other part that gets me is the credits, where the editor decided to go with Billy Joel’s “My Life,” also the theme song of Bosom Buddies. Showing clips of Vader to that tune is truly inspired. It’s amazing how much the background music can change the emotion or the texture of what you’re watching. In Vader’s case, it really humanizes one of pop culture’s top villians. Weird how that works.

That got me thinking. If I had the time or video editing capabilities, what movies could I corrupt… er, edit to provide an interesting twist once the closing edits played? It’d be a hoot to show, say, the last 15 seconds of a classic movie and then cut to the credits — only to have an inappropriate or just highly unusual song play.

So, after conferring to several of my colleagues, here are a few of the first batch.

  • Movie: Schindler’s List. New song for the closing credits: “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. It only makes sense (ok, it only makes sense to me) that one of the most sobering and powerful movies should end to the ultimate happy song. I also debated “Der Kommissar” by Falco, since it’s by a German artist, but I think the shock value of walking on sunshine after that movie is too good.
  • Movie: Fatal Attraction. New song for the closing credits: “Humping Around” by Bobby Brown. Obviously.
  • Movie: Driving Miss Daisy. New song for the closing credits: “Me So Horny” by 2 Live Crew. Honest to god, I have no idea why, but this would make me laugh for about a week.
  • Movie: The Crying Game. New song for the closing credits: “You Dropped the Bomb on Me” by The Gap Band. Obviously.
  • Movie: The Empire Strikes Back. New song for the closing credits: “The Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin. Think about it.
  • Movie: The Queen. New song for the closing credits: “The Lady is a Tramp” by Frank Sinatra. She’s a classy broad, that queen. She deserves a catchy tune sung by Mr. Sinatra, true American royalty.

This is a great bar game — or just a way to completely wreck someone’s concentration at work for about a day or so. Enjoy.

For Schindler’s list, I was thinking more of the Benny Hill theme song. Of course, with the characters sped up 10x. And a woman in a bikini running around for no reason.

falco is austrian, not german. we tend to differentiate down here. germany vs. austria is pretty much the same thing as the US vs. canada – just with less junk food.

    (loses its appeal, doesn’t it?)

The Austrian-German thing is a total screw up. My apologies to both countries, the Kaiser, Franz Schubert and the Von Trapp family. But mostly, to Falco. Because he deserves better.
