Tales too long for Facebook
Every so often, I come up with thoughts that I’d like to post on Facebook or Twitter. But, they’re either too long, complicated or just downright out-of-the-blue for these vehicles. Let’s face it… the 140-character limit of micro-blogging is a bit too micro for bloggers. So, here are a few vignettes that I couldn’t cram into social media.
Enduring the Olympics, the 2010 version
Here’s a sign that you’ve had a personal blog for a little too long. Tonight, I sat down to write a missive about how I’m a bit fatigued watching the Olympics. You know… how after a week-plus of near saturation of coverage, you start to feel tired yourself, as if you’re a cross-country skier dragging into the homestretch with nothing left in the tank. Honk if you’re confused by this bumper sticker
A while ago, I wrote an entry about the 10 signs for “slow driver ahead.” While not the most popular thing I’ve ever scribbled, it was nonetheless a favorite of a co-worker whose SMP codename is Skipper. Skipper and Mr. Skipper live in the hinterlands outside of Raleigh, NC, and they both know what it’s like to get stuck behind a pokey driver. Read more…
SMP 200th post extravaganza (an all-clip episode)
Remember those classic sitcom episodes when the writers just get lazy and show old clips around a bare minimum of new content? Just a trip down amnesia lane, where everybody gets paid for another week of work even though nobody, you know, works? Well, welcome to the Sweet Monkey Pie blogstravaganza, as the site has reached its 200 posts! Read more…
Top 10, er, 12 Christmas songs part 2, electric boogaloo
Here they are – the second five from my top 10 12 Christmas songs. They were 10 in my first cut (check out the first five), but I found a couple of more while listening to XM the last few days. Ultimately, I couldn’t leave any of these out. And really, 10 was an arbitrary number anyway. So, here are the second seven. Enjoy the snow-covered goodness.
Top 10 Christmas songs… at least to me… stop judging!
The other day, I heard Jewel’s rendition of “O Holy Night.” It was one of the worst holiday efforts I’ve ever heard, causing me to spend several minutes trying to find a single word that signified just how awful I was. Finally, I gave up and had to make one up. It was fuckin’crapsuckasstinabular. Seriously, I considered switching to Judaism or going with Festivus afterward. But, then I realized just how bad I would do at the “Feats of Strength.” Read more…
Helping a Tiger with his tale
Earlier today, Tiger Woods fired the apology heard ’round the world. You read it. I read it. We all read it. Read more…
Act Like You’ve Been There – and Other Tips for Rec Leaguers Everywhere
Just realized that for the first time in the four-year history of SMP, I let a month go by without a post. Ah, the lost October. Man, that’s just inexcusable. So, here comes a super-sized entry about something that’s near and dear to my heart. At least after the last few weeks. Sportsmanship in rec leagues. Read more…
Everything I ever needed to know, I learned from hip hop
Sorry to my halves of dozens of fans out there who have been waiting for another blog post. I’ve been pretty busy lately, and more importantly, my brain has become a non-functioning pool of applesauce. But, like in previous funks, it took XM radio to break me out of this creative valley.
Facing the UNC football season with (very) guarded optimism
Earlier today, I heard a few NC State fans in the office discussing the upcoming football season. They were going position-by-position, talking about the strengths and weaknesses of this year’s squad. And, with the season less than a month away, you could feel the palpable sense of excitement.
