Breaking weeks of writer's block, exhaustion and plain-ol'-fashioned laziness

November 24, 2008 1 comment

Sorry for the delay in posting anything. I’ve been pretty wiped out most evenings, finding myself more content to just watch TV or read than to come up with anything creative. Tonight, though, as I watch the epic UNC-Chaminade game, I figured I had time to post some random thoughts. Enjoy…

Today's can't miss idea: Let's tell Peter King to write a sitcom…

…except we won’t tell him he’s writing a sitcom. We’ll tell him he’s scripting a new drama about the cutting-edge issues surrounding the NFL. What he comes up with, however, will be knee-slapping, full-force hilariousness of untold proportions.

Olympic-sized TV fatigue

August 18, 2008 1 comment

This must be how Michael Phelps felt after winning gold medal numero ocho at the Beijing games.  Because I’m exhausted.  Of watching Olympic sports.  And I somehow have six more days to go.  How in the Sacramone can I keep going?

What's worse than "That Guy?" A beach volleyball update

Quick update… I’ve blogged in the past about the anguish of playing “That Guy” in rec-league volleyball. I’ve also gotten some good response on my request for volleyball team names. But here’s a story that tops them all.

Feeling old: Hitting the wall at 35

In April, I turned 35, and I treated this like any birthday. I woke up, went to work, came home and continued with my life. It’s always been another day, dating back to the time I turned 18 during a high school club trip and didn’t really think about my birthday until I filled out a check on the day itself.

Rocco vs. Tiger: The US Open or a bad prizefight?

Like any dad who got cut a bit of slack yesterday thanks to the Fathers Day holiday (thanks Hallmark!), I was actually able to watch the entire back nine of the U.S. Open yesterday.  Tiger Woods grabbed the lead, pissed it away to Rocco Mediate… then Rocco was unable to extend the lead, allowing Tiger to snatch it back.  Riveting golf.

The weirdest moment of the NBA Finals

I meant to post this last night, but I got stuck with the whole linking to Mother Bunker issue.  Had to relay my thoughts on the most important part of the game. No, it’s not the 24-point comeback last night or Kobe’s sinister gaze whenever anyone on his team does anything bad (as if his 6-19 shooting performance wasn’t bad enough).  Did anyone see who sang the national anthem last night?  Jeffrey Osborne, the musical genius behind “On the Wings of Love” and other 1980s ballads. Random thoughts on the NBA Championships

I’ve been watching Lakers vs. Celtics pretty intently in the NBA Championship. It’s a really good series, with two rivals playing at a high level — and some referees who are interpreting the basketball rulebook like Alberto Gonzales with the Geneva Convention. Let’s play the feud!

Random thoughts on the NCAA tourney

OK, it’s been about a week since the end of March Madness, but hey… I’m a UNC fan.  It’s perfectly acceptable to try to forget the Final Four happened.  Last week at this time, I was watching the end of the miserable UNC-Kansas game and wondering how things could have gone so incredibly wrong.

It's Bilas and Endberg at the Sweet Sixteen

I’m enjoying the CBS feed tonight, not just because the Tar Heels are ahead at this point in the second half (it’s 41-25 at the 14:33 mark as I type this). The game is nice because we have the always steady and objective Dick Enberg paired with the knowledgeable and objective Jay Bilas. After two weekends of Billy Packer, it’s like I’ve been released from some negative, nit-picking prison.
