Listen to this guy: Dave Barnes

The other day, I was listening to a tune by Howie Day or some similar contemporary singer-songwriter. I glanced at the iTunes app and noticed a name in the “Other listeners bought” window for a guy named Dave Barnes. Having never heard of him, I clicked on his name and listened to a 30-second clip of his song, “On a Night Like This.” Read more…

King of the road: More stories from the San Fran trip

Other random notes about the trip to San Francisco:

  • God, what an unbelievably beautiful city. Take away the astronomical cost of living and the ever-present threat that you’ll die in the fiery shaking hell of The Big One, it’s a perfect city. Great weather, nice people, wonderful food. You never ask a San Franciscan why they live there. Just how.

Dook-UNC, Henderson v. Hansbrough: It's time to jump around

February 6, 2008 Leave a comment

Yesterday, I had one of those great moments where being a dad just takes on a different light. No, my son didn’t cure cancer or win the big game. He just did something that made me laugh – and got me very fired up for the Dook-UNC tonight.

After surviving the Blizzard of '08, I'm ready for some football

January 20, 2008 Leave a comment

Yesterday, the Triangle area of North Carolina was under a “winter storm warning.” For days, the local weather guys had painted a picture of an almost-certain “storm” of 2-4 inches of snow. For a region that averages about 8 inches every year – and hasn’t seen any measurable snow in about three years – this was big stuff.

Do the names of TV channels matter anymore?

Tonight, I sat down and surfed the channels a bit.  When I got to Channel 54, I stumbled across In the Line of Fire, a pretty decent Eastwood movie.  Of course, channel 54 is TV Land.  The channel that was formed to give us a chance to see classic (or near-classic) shows like Sanford & Son and The Beverly Hillbillies.  So, they’re playing a 1993 suspense movie.  That makes sense.

Led poisoning or… I just don't like Led Zeppelin

December 14, 2007 1 comment

Earlier this week, I was surfing around the HD channels, and I saw Robert Plant singing a Led Zeppelin song (not sure which one). Since the guy has looked 50 for the past 20 years – seriously, how does he pull that off? – I assumed it was archival footage from one of his solo concerts. Turns out, it was the Led Zeppelin reunion concert earlier this week at the O2 Arena in London.

XM and Sweetmonkeypie: Something's happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear

November 9, 2007 Leave a comment

OK, last night I wrote yet another entry about the bizarre programming on XM radio’s channel 21.  That made this morning’s experience driving experience pretty surreal.

Chubby Checker, the Fat Boys and Will Smith: That's my XM

November 8, 2007 1 comment

I hate to keep harping on this, but the selection on XM’s channel 21 is just utterly jaw-dropping. Sure, they’re still playing all the great music from Pink, Boys Like Girls and DJ Okayshun featuring Lil’ Stinkbug with T-Pum’kin and Mo’ Snapple (OK, I made up that last collection of names, but wouldn’t they all be good hip-hop names). But they are sneaking in some wild selections. Peep the list below, and bear in mind, I’m not making this up. Read more…

XM Radio finally starts to give us fair warning on Channel 21

October 25, 2007 Leave a comment

As I’ve mentioned before – here, here and here – XM Radio has played some interesting music on channel 21, KISS (”Fresh Hits of Pop, Rock and Rhythm”). For a long time, my primary complaint is that they would go from a recent song by Justin Timberlake and segue directly into something like Nenah Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance (actual song recently heard on channel 21).

The return of "Baby Please" music?

October 16, 2007 4 comments

One of my favorite songs currently on the charts is Elliott Yamin’s tune “Wait for You.” It’s a catchy tune, especially from an American Idol contestant. This guy lost to Taylor Hicks? Um, there’s nothing more I need to know about Idol. Any show that chooses Taylor over Elliott is, scientifically speaking, batshit insane.
