I’ve always read historical books. Guess it makes me a dull guy, but I’m always intrigued to find out how we, the human race, got from point A to point B. To me, there’s a lot of truth in the saying “Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it” (coined by writer George Santayana, who, oddly enough, I know nothing about). I’ve always used historical works to frame current events – makes reality a bit more palatable.

Yesterday, the Triangle area of North Carolina was under a “winter storm warning.” For days, the local weather guys had painted a picture of an almost-certain “storm” of 2-4 inches of snow. For a region that averages about 8 inches every year – and hasn’t seen any measurable snow in about three years – this was big stuff.

Tonight, I watched the Cowboys lose to the Giants, and if I was ever thankful that I spurned my allegiance to the ‘Boys, it was tonight (to recap: the Cowboys signed TO, and after two decades of support, I just gave up because, really, they don’t care about me, so I don’t have to care about them). This game would have been gut wrenching, not just because the Cowboys’ choke job turned Eli Manning into a clutch performer (no small feat). It’s mostly because the pre-T.O. Dallas fan in me would have been absolutely sure that Patrick Crayton threw this game.

Tonight, the college football award will try to anoint its national champion with all the precision and deft care of a drunk frat boy trying to piss on a lit cigarette… while riding in the back of an RV… being driven by an even drunker frat guy… down a gravel road… at night… without headlights…

Tonight, I sat down and surfed the channels a bit. When I got to Channel 54, I stumbled across In the Line of Fire, a pretty decent Eastwood movie. Of course, channel 54 is TV Land. The channel that was formed to give us a chance to see classic (or near-classic) shows like Sanford & Son and The Beverly Hillbillies. So, they’re playing a 1993 suspense movie. That makes sense.
